A juvenile curfew for the city of Vicksburg that was put in place April 2 has been lifted.

The curfew, which was part of the city’s response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, had prohibited individuals under the age of 18 to be out unsupervised between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

Monday, Mayor George Flaggs said he decided to lift the curfew after receiving a call from a 17-year-old girl who asked him to lift the juvenile curfew.

“She was a young lady who had graduated from high school and said she was now ready for college,” he said after the meeting.

Flaggs said she asked him why the juveniles were being singled out and if things could return to normal.

“That (the juvenile curfew) was the only thing left; everyone else was open, the bars and everybody. That’s what happened,” he said, adding the city will return to the juvenile curfew outlined in the city’s ordinances.

Under the city’s code of ordinances, the curfew for people under age 18 is from midnight to 6 a.m. When school is in session the curfew is from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

A citywide curfew, for all individuals, was also part of some of the early restrictions put in place. It was lifted on May 21 to coincide with the reopening of casinos.
