Sunday’s report from the Mississippi State Department of Health provided a break of sorts for Warren County officials as just four new cases were reported overnight.

The report Sunday of four new cases follows six straight days of daily new COVID-19 cases in the double-digits, and two one-day records set. Thursday’s report of 20 new cases set a one-day record that had stood for almost two months. Friday, that number was shattered, as 33 new cases were confirmed. Saturday, the state reported 15 new cases in Warren County.

In all, the county has now reported 515 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 18 virus-related deaths, since the first case was reported in Warren County on March 29.

The cases this weekend also pushed Warren County past Yazoo County for the first time in total number of cases reported during the pandemic. Yazoo County has had 509 total cases reported.

The new cases Sunday push the number of active cases in Warren County to a pandemic-high of 217.

Overall, 226 new cases and five virus-related deaths were reported statewide overnight. Since the first case was confirmed in Mississippi on March 11, the state has now reported 30,900 cases and 1,111 deaths.

Even though the 226 new cases reported are far lower than the nearly 1,000 new cases reported Friday and Saturday, the news is not good. The state Sunday also showed that the number of people hospitalized (647) reached a pandemic-high. The number of those patients in intensive care also jumped Sunday to 175.
