Coached by Hylon Adams, the 1964 Buccaneers helped start the school’s dynasty but came up just short in their quest for a championship. They finished 11-1 after losing to Hattiesburg Rowan on a last-minute touchdown in the Negro Big 8 championship game.

Two years later, with future Jackson State coaching legend W.C. Gorden calling the shots and a new cast of players that included quarterback William Triplett, Temple went a perfect 11-0 for its first undefeated season. Triplett had more than 20 career touchdowns passes.
