Greatest on the Gridiron: ’73 Vicksburg vs. ’93 Warren Central

The 1973 Vicksburg Gators won the Big 8 championship, and had no trouble advancing out of the first round in the Greatest on the Gridiron tournament. The No. 1 seed in the Gators Region easily defeated 1945 Carr Central 81-15 to move on to a much more difficult second-round showdown against the 1993 Warren Central Vikings.

The ‘93 Vikings squeaked past their 1988 predecessors that won the MHSAA Class 5A championship by a single vote, 52-51, in the opening round.
In 1993, the Vikings won their first 14 games — only two of them by less than 10 points — and set a single-season school record by scoring 492 points. They reached the Class 5A final before losing 42-28 to South Panola in a game many observers consider one of the best state title games ever played.
