Vicksburg officially kicked off the Christmas season Friday with its fifth annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Washington Street Park.

“We had about 250-300 attend,” said Main Street Vicksburg Executive Director Kim Hopkins. “We had a lot of people show up as the tree was being lit, and the children enjoyed riding the Sports Force train.

“It was a very good night and everybody enjoyed themselves.”

Visitors to the city’s downtown park were serenaded by popular music and Christmas carols by the Elite 6 band and children got to visit and have pictures taken with Santa Claus and with the Grinch, who made an appearance and drew a few admirers as he traveled through the park.
