Titans finish season
in statewide tournament
The Port Gibson Titans were among 16 teams that competed in the Mississippi Youth Bowl Championship Series tournament on Dec. 2 at Vicksburg High School’s Memorial Stadium.

The Titans’ 8U C-Team lost 32-0 to the Canton Jaguars to finish their season. The Titans won the Jackson Freedom League championship by going 8-0 in the league, and earned berths to two postseason tournaments.

The Mississippi Youth Bowl Championship Series is a three-week tournament involving champions of the state’s various youth football leagues. First-round games were played in Vicksburg last weekend, second-round games are Dec. 9 at Kosciusko High School, and the championship games are Dec. 16 at Hughes Field in Jackson.

In the other first-round game in the 8U division last weekend in Vicksburg, the Southern Miss Titans from Hattiesburg beat the Jackson Jaguars 12-7; and the West Point Packers defeated the Hazlehurst Raiders 15-6.

In the 10U B-Team division, the Southern Miss Titans beat the Jackson Jaguars 26-0; the Jackson Bears beat the Warren County Ravens 22-12; and the Jackson Dolphins beat the Hazlehurst Raiders 12-6.

In the 12U division, the Jackson Jaguars beat the Southern Miss Titans 27-20; and the New Hope Trojans defeated the Jackson Rams 18-0.

VHS Ugly Sweater Softball
Vicksburg High School will play its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas softball game on Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. at the Softball Swamp field on Army Navy Drive.

The event features a slow-pitch game with Vicksburg High’s baseball and softball players. Admission is a gift or donation that will be donated to needy families in Warren County.

VGSA softball registration
Registration for the Vicksburg Girls Softball Association’s 2024 spring season will begin Jan. 2 and continue until Feb. 5. There are five divisions for players ages 4-16, and the registration fee is $60 per player.

Teams will form in mid-February, practices begin Feb. 26, and the season on March 18. Registration forms are available at 601 Sports, or on the VGSA’s Facebook page.

Red Carpet Bowl scholarships
Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Red Carpet Bowl scholarships. Several $750 scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors in the Class of 2024 at Porter’s Chapel Academy, St. Aloysius, Vicksburg High and Warren Central.

Applicants must fill out a form that includes extracurricular activities and other information, attach an unofficial transcript, and write a 500-word essay.

The deadline to apply is March 5, 2024.

Free riding classes
The Louisiana Legends bareback riding and saddle bronc riding school will be held Dec. 27-29 at the Franklin Parish Activity Center in Winnsboro, Louisiana. The free program provided classes in several rodeo disciplines, taught by pro riders.
