Expansion of the Vicksburg-Warren County Port hit an important benchmark this week as county officials completed the purchase of the final land parcel needed for the project.

Warren County supervisors on Monday approved the purchase of 754.37 acres of land from Entergy at a cost of $310,888.02.

“At this juncture, Warren County – with the collaboration of the City of Vicksburg – has acquired all the property necessary for the project,” said Pablo Diaz, President of the Vicksburg Warren County partnership.

More than 1,700 acres of land along the Mississippi River have been purchased since 2018, when the Legislature first allocated funds to explore the feasibility of a port expansion south of Interstate 20.

Diaz said Thursday the purchase of this final parcel of land completes an important part of the project and allows developers and officials to focus on next steps.

“This is definitely an important step in the right direction because control of the property is needed for the project to develop,” he said.

Diaz added “a large of team of people” are working to obtain necessary permits for the project and moving ahead with the next phases of development, which include finalizing design and permitting, financing and construction.
