80 Years Ago: 1943
Dr. A.J. Messina was elected president of the local Methodist society. • The USS Vicksburg was christened at Newport News, Va.

St. Paul Catholic Church was declared unsafe after tornado damage and will be rebuilt. • Services were held for R.B. Keithley.

Robert Emmirch was elected chairman of the Salvation Army board of directors for 1964.

Wiley Thomas Piazza was named to the president’s list at the University of Southern Mississippi.

A special Vicksburg Planning Commission committee voted to dissolve. • John Robert “Trey” Griffin III was one.

A crowd of about 50 showed up for the opening of the River City Cabaret. • Malcolm Williams signed a football scholarship with the University of Tulsa.

VFW members watched on television as Saddam Hussein was captured by U.S. troops in Iraq. • a 7-year-old was shot during a fight in Utica.

10 Years Ago: 2013
I died, and 1 was injured in a shooting at a birthday party at the American Legion building on Monroe St. • The Attic Gallery hosted an open house.
