An electrical problem was the cause of a late afternoon fire that heavily damaged the Wholesale Import and Liquidation furniture store at 2006 Clay St. on Friday.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said the cause was determined during an investigation conducted by fire department investigator Nathaniel Williams and the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters were called to the fire about 5:34 p.m. Friday and arrived to see flames coming through the roof of the building. Stamps said firefighters entering the building found mattresses on fire in a storage room.

He said fire damage was contained to the storage room and the front area of the store. The rest of the store had smoke damage.
