PCA puts six players on All-MAIS team; Sharkey-Issaquena and Tallulah combine for a dozen

Porter’s Chapel Academy’s outstanding football season has brought another round of accolades for its players.

Six PCA players were selected to the All-MAIS Class 2A football team that was announced Wednesday. Quarterback John Wyatt Massey, lineman Conley Johnston, running back Jase Jung and wide receiver Thomas Azlin were on the offensive list, while linebacker Hunter Simms and defensive back Ty Mack were on the defensive side.

Massey, Jung and Azlin each set school and Warren County records while leading the Eagles to a 12-1 record, the Class 2A semifinals, and the program’s first district championship since 2008.

Massey set the county’s single-game (7) and single-season (40) records for touchdown passes. He completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 1,866 yards and 40 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. He also set the school’s career record for TD passes.

Jung set PCA’s school record for rushing touchdowns in a season, with 25, and finished with 1,974 yards on the ground.
Azlin caught a school-record 16 touchdown passes while totaling 28 receptions for 668 yards. Azlin was also a standout on defense, with a team-high 98 tackles, 14 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Johnston and Simms excelled on both sides of the football as well. Both players started started every game on the offensive line, and helped anchor a solid defense. Johnston had 75 total tackles, seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Simms finished the season with 76 tackles and six tackles for loss.

Mack was another two-way star. He had 42 tackles on the defensive side, but was a much bigger piece of the Eagles’ success on offense. The senior running back had 1,447 all-purpose yards and scored 21 touchdowns. He had 743 yards and seven touchdowns rushing, and caught 33 passes for 686 yards and 14 TDs.

While Porter’s Chapel filled up the Class 2A All-MAIS roster, Sharkey-Issaquena Academy and Tallulah Academy were all over the Class 1A list.

SIA’s Gary Jackson was the overall Player of the Year and Matt Homan the Coach of the Year after leading the Confederates to the Class 1A championship.

Jackson rushed for nearly 1,500 yards this season. In a 32-26 win over Calhoun Academy in the Class 1A title game he rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns, including the 35-yard game-winner as time expired.

Eight other players from SIA made the All-MAIS team as well. On offense, quarterback John Barrett Boykin, lineman Ashton Thomas and receiver Corderrius Jackson represented the team. On defense it was linemen Aiden Allen and Jerry Johnson, linebackers Brady Brooks and Damarion Stamps, and defensive back Tom Davis.

Tallulah Academy put three players on the Class 1A list after finishing 9-4 and reaching the second round of the playoffs.
Running back Brayson Morson and wide receiver Gage Palmer were on the offense, and tight end Cade Morgan made the cut as a punter.

Morson rushed for more than 2,200 yards and 33 touchdowns this season. Palmer had 398 rushing yards and five touchdowns; caught 20 passes for 398 yards; and on defense had 56 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two interceptions.
