Warren Central earns two key region wins against Ridgeland

Round one of the fight for the MHSAA Region 2-6A boys’ soccer championship went to Warren Central.

Tyler Godshaw scored late in the first overtime to break a scoreless tie, and the Vikings held on to beat Ridgeland 1-0 on Tuesday.

Godshaw’s goal came off a long pass from Jonah Artman about eight minutes into the first of two 10-minute overtime periods. Keeper Colby Solomon made two saves in the second overtime to seal the win.

Solomon finished with six saves, including one on a penalty kick in the second half.

With the win, Warren Central (9-3, 3-0 Region 2-6A) finished the first half of its region schedule in first place. It will play five region games in a two-week span in January, beginning with a road trip to Neshoba Central on Jan. 9.

Ridgeland (6-1-3, 1-1) took its first loss of the season.

Warren Central also beat Ridgeland (4-4-2, 1-1 Region 2-6A) in dramatic fashion in Tuesday’s girls’ game.

Jordan Polk scored the game’s only goal in the 76th minute to lift Warren Central to the victory over Ridgeland.

Keeper Hayleigh Simmons made seven saves, including one on a breakaway, for the Lady Vikes (9-3, 3-0).

Warren Central finished the first trip through its region schedule undefeated and will head into the second half of the season in first place. The Lady Vikes have one more game before the holiday break, Dec. 21 at Germantown, and will play five region games in January.
