Wednesday was a day of celebration for Vicksburg Fire Department as four firefighters were promoted.

Family and fellow firefighters were present when Captain Paramedic Bradley Wilson, Lieutenant EMT Jamie Judge, Lieutenant EMT Troy Scott and Lieutenant EMT Mark Dave were recognized for their new positions and received pins designating their rank.

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. spoke at the ceremony, remembering his brother, Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Flaggs, who served the City of Vicksburg for many years.

“You can never lay down that badge,” Flaggs said. “It’s in your heart.”

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps congratulated the firefighters prior to the ceremony.

“The men and women who make up the Vicksburg Fire Department are some of the community’s bravest and most respectful members whenever called upon,” Stamps said. “And I’m thankful for that. I thank each and every one of them for being a part of it. It is important to note that their duties extend beyond just extinguishing fires. They’re expected to  respond in all types of emergencies, including hazardous materials spills, motor vehicle accidents and medical calls within our community.”

All firefighters are certified emergency medical technicians and work on city-run ambulances. Many continue their education to become paramedics.

Family members placed pins on the shirts and lapels of the newly promoted men, symbols that signify their new ranks. Wilson, Judge, Scott and Dave concluded the service with a swearing-in ceremony to seal their promotions, promising to serve their community with compassion, courage and integrity.
