Porter’s Chapel edges Vicksburg at Halls Ferry tennis tournament

Porter’s Chapel Academy’s tennis team won one and lost one Saturday at the Halls Ferry Invitational.
The Eagles beat Vicksburg High 4-3, then lost to Silliman 4-3 in the tournament played on the Halls Ferry Park courts in Vicksburg.
PCA lost both singles matches against Vicksburg, but won four of the five doubles matches.
The No. 1 girls doubles team of Sophie Masterson and Marley Bufkin beat Vicksburg’s Janiegha Thomas and Madisyn Bailey 7-5, 6-1.
At No. 2 girls’ doubles, PCA’s Peyton Combs and Sarah Felker rallied after dropping the first set to win 2-6, 7-6, 1-0.
PCA’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Henry Slayton and Thomas Azlin rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while John McGee and Corbin Bass won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.
Vicksburg’s Kameryn Bailey and Amnesty Tyler beat PCA’s Jordan Combs and Noah Labarre 6-1, 6-1 in mixed doubles, and the Gators also won both singles points.
Mekhiya Smith beat Mia Abdo 6-0, 6-0 in girls’ singles, and Danny Curry grinded out a 6-4, 7-6 win over Nic Neihaus in boys’ singles.
In their second match, against Silliman, the Eagles again got most of their points from the doubles matches.
McGee and Slayton won their No. 1 boys doubles match 6-0, 6-0; and Neihaus and Bass won 6-3, 7-6 in No. 2 boys’ doubles. Noah Labarre won his boys’ singles match by forfeit.
Porter’s Chapel will be off until April 4, when it plays Franklin Academy in an MAIS District 4-3A match at Halls Ferry Park.
Vicksburg, meanwhile, will play on back-to-back days early next week. It’ll go to Jackson to face Callaway on Monday, then be back at Halls Ferry Park Tuesday to face Warren Central. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
