The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) on Tuesday released information regarding four separate shooting incidents, three of which remain as open investigations.
VPD initially reached out to the public Saturday morning for help identifying suspects in a shooting at the embattled Jacques’ Bar on Levee Street. The bar and the City of Vicksburg have been involved in a longstanding legal battle over recurring instances of violence at the downtown location, with Saturday’s incident being the most recent in a span of shootings stretching back several years.
VPD said shots were reportedly fire in the bar’s parking lot at approximately 1:35 a.m., striking several vehicles but resulting in no injuries. VPD officials said officers recovered “a large number of shell casings” in the parking lot following the incident, adding the casings came from “various types of guns.”
“A description given of possible suspect vehicles involved were a black Chevy Tahoe and a red Camaro,” VPD officials said Saturday morning. “The possible Tahoe SUV that left the scene was seen heading east on Clay (Street) at a high rate of speed. The officers lost sight of the vehicle after a pursuit from Clay Street to Highway 27 (and into Hinds County).”
The weekend’s second shooting occurred Saturday at 10:39 p.m., when VPD said shots were fired into an occupied vehicle on Crawford Street.
“At the scene, contact was made with two victims who said a light colored SUV or truck sped by and fired shots into their vehicle,” VPD said in a statement.
A third weekend shooting took place Sunday at 11:27 p.m. when officers were dispatched to Whataburger on Halls Ferry Road in reference to shots fired in the area.
“Shell casings were located in the parking lot,” officials said. “Shortly thereafter, the intended victims contacted law enforcement from the area of East Clay Street. They stated four black males in a black sedan fired shots that struck their vehicle in the rear bumper. This incident stemmed from a fight at a party in Louisiana.”
Monday morning brought a fourth shooting incident, when officers were called to the 100 block of North Farmer Street for a reported assault with a firearm.
“On scene, they found a 42-year-old black male suffering from a wound to his right ear. He identified the 77-year-old suspect, who was soon located and detained. At this time, the victim has declined to prosecute.”
VPD is asking that anyone with relevant information regarding any of the weekend shootings contact the police department at 601-636-2511.
