American Cruise Lines has announced it is acquiring the four river cruise vessels that sailed for the now defunct American Queen Voyages (AQV).

According to industry publication Seatrade Cruise News, the acquisition includes the American Queen, American Duchess, and American Countess, all of which travel the Mississippi River, as well as the American Empress, which services customers in the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines will reportedly purchase the vessels through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process as filed by AQV’s parent company Hornblower Group.

“American Cruise Lines is pleased to be the successful bidder for AQV’s river vessels,” the company said in a statement to Seatrade Cruise News. “We look forward to announcing additional details after this portion of the Hornblower Holdings bankruptcy process concludes.”

AQV abruptly ceased all operations in February following an email sent to employees at the company’s facilities in New Orleans; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Vancouver, Washington; and Clarkston, Washington, notifying them that their employment would be terminated.

“This action is expected to be permanent,” the email said. “The timing of this notice is necessitated by both unforeseen business circumstances and an inability to obtain sufficient capital at a commercially reasonable rate to continue operations.”

American Cruise Lines’ acquisition of the AQV’s vessels is pending final approval in a court hearing, Seatrade Cruise News reported.
