100 Years Ago: 1924

A new main altar arrived for St. Paul Catholic Church. • Frank Garvey built a cottage on Cherry and China streets. • Hundreds visited the opening of the City Drug Store.

90 Years Ago: 1934

Tyrus Meachman and Ruby Clark were married. • The St. Francis Xavier Academy alumnae  presented the play, “Sonia.” • “The Woman in His Life,” starring Otton Kruger, was the attraction at the Saenger Theater. 

80 Years Ago: 1944

Mary Josephine Lindley died.  • Melvin Faulk was ill at Mercy Hospital. • A.A. Gamble Jr. was Vicksburg from the Naval Training Station at Bainbridge, Md. while here he visited with family and friends. 

70 Years Ago: 1954

Audrey T. Brent passed away. • Services were held for Henry Johnson. • Redwood High School seniors presented, “For Pete’s Sake,” at the school auditorium.

60 Years Ago: 1964

Mr. and Mrs. John Stout announced the birth of their daughter, Cynthia. • Mrs. R.H. Haas and Mrs. L.G. Horn were named chairs of the annual Vicksburg Community Concert Association campaign. • Mrs. Z.B. Fry was elected president of the Vicksburg Education Association. 

50 Years Ago: 1974

Sgt. Jimmy Brooks was selected Police Officer of the Year for 1973 by the Vicksburg Civitan Club. • Police Chief Marion Brown celebrated his 20th year of employment with the Vicksburg Police Department. • Kandy Diane Worley celebrated her third birthday. 

40 Years Ago: 1984

Warren Central Junior High Girls Club raised $800 for Child Find Group. • Elizabeth C. Shropshire of Rolling Fork died. • Dr. John G. McCall spoke during the Community Prayer Breakfast.

30 Years Ago: 1994

Benjamin Schrock, 14, represented Mississippi at the sixth annual RespecTeen National Youth Forum in Washington D.C.

20 Years Ago: 2004

Robert Hubbard was the new owner of El Morocco Club in Marcus Bottom.

10 Years Ago: 2014

The city was to track the litter law closely. • “The Great Gatsby” was to open at The Strand. • Junior Auxilary was to host its sixth annual golf tournament at the Vicksburg Country Club.
