Downed power line leads to house fire

Published 7:14 pm Friday, April 5, 2024

A Friday-afternoon house fire at 1401 Division Street is the latest in a string of structure fires across Vicksburg in recent weeks.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said the fire was the result of a downed power line that caught grass and the structure itself on fire.

Stamps said there was significant damage to the home, but no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Earlier in the week, Stamps told The Post the recent rash of fires have not shared a common cause. Stamps said issues ranging from embers from an unextinguished cigarette to electrical problems have led to fires on Wabash Avenue and Buck Street in recent weeks.

Stamps said, as summer approaches, practicing safe cooking habits, along with all other fire safety practices already in place, is paramount to avoiding an even larger uptick in incidents.
