Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Sayre

Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Sayre passed away Thursday, April 4. Betsy was born in Greenwood, on October 5, 1938, to the late Sarah Alice and Robert L. Fleming.

Betsy graduated from Greenwood High School in 1956. She continued her education at Methodist Hospital in Memphis and received her RN certification from the State of Tennessee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Henry West Fleming.

She married Charles R. “Chuck” Sayre when he was stationed at Millington Naval Air Station, Millington, Tenn.

Betsy was a wonderful caring nurse for approximately 65 years, working at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital and University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.

Later, she moved to Vicksburg to be closer to her family and worked at various hospitals in Vicksburg. She served as a nurse on several mission trips to Mexico and Honduras.

She served her country for a year as a VISTA Volunteer (Volunteers in Service to America). She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and adored her cats.

Betsy was a member of Crawford Street UMC.

She leaves a son, Charles Michael (Mickey) Sayre; one grandson, Cam Sayre (Katie); and brothers, Robert (Bobby) Fleming (Laura) and David Thomas Fleming (Pat) of Evansville, Wis.

Services for Betsy will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Crawford Street UMC.
