Volunteer of the Week: Leigh Conerly is working to make the need for animal shelters a thing of the past

Our Volunteer of the Week is Leigh Conerly. Leigh has been doing pet rescue much of her life. She works at Paws Rescue, a no-kill animal rescue that finds homes for abandoned, neglected or stray cats and dogs. Leigh has been married for 21 years and is a mom and grandmother. She has been at her full-time job for 30 years. She loves photography, the Arkansas Razorbacks, animals and being with her family. Leigh dreams that one day there won’t be a need for shelters or rescues and every pet will have a family to love them.

How did Paws Rescue begin?

I received a call from the city animal shelter requesting help with a cocker spaniel, that was in bad shape. I went to check on the dog, loaded him up, and headed to the vet.

How long has Paws Rescue been in Vicksburg?

Paws has been a part of the Vicksburg community for 20 years.

What is your favorite memory of your time with Paws Rescue?

I love seeing pets transformed from scared and sick animals to happy and healthy ones.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

Volunteering is a vital part of organizations. It is a great way to learn how organizations work and what their needs are. Be a voice for the voiceless.

What are some of your tasks while working with Paws Rescue?

I handle all the day-to-day operations, i.e., budget, work with the vet clinics, coordinate intakes, work with other rescue organizations, transport, write thank you notes/memorials, plan fundraisers, social media, handle phone/email calls and foster.

What have you learned from volunteering?

Rescue is very rewarding and heartbreaking, but when you give your time and heart, you get so much more back in return.

How can someone else who might be interested in volunteering with Paws Rescue get involved?

Please message me on Facebook for volunteer opportunities.

If there is a volunteer who should be featured, please submit their name and contact information to volunteer@vicksburgpost.com.
