Voting is now open in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

This week’s nominees are Warren Central baseball player Maddox Lynch; and track athletes Samantha Edwards (St. Aloysius), Mia Abdo (Porter’s Chapel) and Tyler Henderson (Vicksburg High). Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline.

Maddox Lynch, a junior infielder and pitcher, led Warren Central’s baseball team to a sweep of Lake Cormorant in the first round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs. Lynch batted .500 (3-for-6) with three RBIs and one run scored in the series. He drove in the only run in a 1-0 win in Game 1, and pitched 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts in an 8-3 victory in the Game 2 clincher.

Samantha Edwards, a junior distance runner with St. Aloysius’ girls’ track and field team, won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs at the MAIS Class 5A South State meet on April 24 and 27. Edwards clocked a time of 5:30.73 in the 1,600 and 11:54.98 in the 3,200. She also finished third in the 800 meters and advanced to the state meet in all three events.

Mia Abdo, a freshman with Porter’s Chapel Academy’s girls’ track and field team, won one event and finished second in another to help the Lady Eagles to a second-place team finish at the MAIS Class 3A South State meet on April 27. Abdo won the triple jump with a mark of 29 feet, 1 inch, and finished second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches.

Tyler Henderson, a senior with Vicksburg High’s boys’ track and field team, leaped 43 feet, 9 1/2 inches to win the triple jump at the MHSAA Class 6A North State meet on April 27. Henderson is undefeated in the event this season. He also finished second in the 100 meters, with a time of 11.23 seconds, to advance to the Class 6A state meet.

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline. The winner will be announced Wednesday on vicksburgpost.com and then be featured in our Friday print edition.
