Wreaths have a storied history. In ancient Greece and Rome, they were often worn as crowns during special ceremonies and athletic competitions. In the Renaissance and Victorian eras, wreaths served as a symbol of opulence and were elaborately decorated using flowers, ribbon and feathers.
Wreaths have also been associated with religious practices, like the Advent wreath, and they have been used seasonally to celebrate the beauty of nature.
Today, wreaths are still used to reflect the seasons, as well as to highlight different occasions and to express personal style.
Mary Kaylin Gray with MK Designs shared some of her favorite styles of wreaths for the summer months, along with a couple of tips on how to create one’s own personal design.
“Grapevine wreaths are my favorite base for wreath-making,” Gray said. “You can top the wreath off with a large bow made of various ribbons that coordinate.”
And if using a green wreath, she said ribbons and sashes can be used and then changed out for different seasons.
“For a special occasion or event, a fresh wreath will always make a great statement for your entrée,” Gray said.
And don’t forget, she added, when choosing a wreath, “always consider the color of the exterior of your home.”
