Two Vicksburg men were taken into custody Sunday on gun and drug charges after Vicksburg police initiated a traffic stop on Clay Street.

According to information from Vicksburg Police Department (VPD), officers stopped a Dodge Charger at approximately 11:24 p.m. for a traffic violation, when officers discovered more than 100 grams of marijuana and two Glock 9mm handguns inside the vehicle.

VPD said one handgun had been modified with an illegal switch, which allowed the firearm to function as a fully automatic weapon.

VPD officials said 22-year-old Samuel Smith and 23-year-old Lorenzo Hull-Chiplin were arrested on the scene. Smith and Hull-Chiplin were each charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Both men appeared before Judge Penny Lawson in Vicksburg Municipal Court Monday, where their bonds were set at $35,000 each and they were bound over to the Warren County Grand Jury.

The illegal weapon case will be turned over to the United States Attorney for prosecution within the Federal court system, VPD said.
