[03/09/01] St. Aloysius’ Aaron George was mad after allowing four unearned runs thanks to a pair of outfield miscues in the fourth inning Thursday.

He answered his anger on the mound by retiring 11 of the last 13 batters as the Flashes (6-0, 4-0 Division 7-1A) upended Scott Central, 6-5, at Bazinsky Field.

“I just beared down,” said George, who allowed five unearned runs in seven innings and struck out out eight for the win. “Once we got the lead back, I knew we had the win.”

St. Al answered the Rebels’ big fourth with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, then got two more in the fifth to knot the game at five.

Victor Segers led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. He then stole second and advanced to third on one of four Scott Central errors before scoring the go-ahead run on Chris Bass’ sacrifice fly to center, giving St. Al a 6-5 lead.

Flashes’ coach Joe Graves tried to get Clay Simmons to warm up in the bullpen, but he didn’t have time so George went out for the seventh.

“He asked me in the sixth and I told him, No, I don’t want to come out,'” George said.

Chris Barber hit a one-out single in the seventh for Scott Central, but George got Jonathan Segrest to fly out weakly and then struck out Matt White to end the game.

“If we could peck away and get one here, a couple there, we had a chance to win,” Graves said.

Two long fly balls by Scott Central in the top of the fourth just as twilight had set in sailed over the head of Walker Hengst and rolled to the wall. The Rebels also peppered a single, walk and perfect bunt single in the inning for the 5-1 lead.

St. Al’s Josh Martin, running for George, scored on a wild pitch and Segers, who belted a double, scored on Hengst’s sacrifice fly to pull the Flashes to within 5-3.

Simmons, who reached base three times, walked and scored on a three-base error to start the bottom of the fifth. Charlie Amborn’s RBI single scored Blake Warnock and tied the game at 5.

The Flashes were scheduled to play at Magee on Saturday, then they will play in the Capital Classic in Jackson starting Monday.
