[10/11/04]The remains of Tropical Storm Matthew broke a dry spell in the Vicksburg area over the weekend by dropping more than 7 inches of rainfall on the area since Friday.

According to the Vicksburg Water Treatment Plant at the E.W. Haining Industrial Center, rainfall totaled 7.36 inches and was the first recorded in October. It broke a dry spell that had lasted nearly a month.

As a result of the rain, flooding was reported at three locations outside the city limits, on Paxton Road, on Heather Place off Freetown Road and on Glass Road off U.S. 61 South. Water also covered the road near the exit ramp from East Clay Street to Interstate 20 Sunday, blocking the ramp for a time.

The E-911 office also had reports of four trees down inside the city and 19 in the county, including one on Oak Ridge Road that damaged a parked car.

The Warren County Emergency Management Office also reported a tree knocked out a power line on Halls Ferry Road.

Skipper Whittington of the city street department said the rain caused mudslides on North Washington Street, on Patricia Street and on Confederate Avenue.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service said the rain should be clearing out of the area today. They said there will be a 20 percent chance of rain tonight and Tuesday before the clouds clear out later in the week.
