Robert Dafford of Lafayette, La., and painter Carrie Nixon of Cincinnati, Ohio, work on a riverfront mural depicting the 1907 dedication of the Illinois Memorial in the Vicksburg National Military Park. The $15,000 mural is sponsored by the City of Vicksburg and the Mississippi Arts Commission and is expected to be completed within a few days. Also under way is a mural representing the sinking of the Sultana, sponsored by the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen and descendants of victims of the Sultana, which was sunk in 1865, killing 1,700 to 1,800 passengers. It is projected to be completed by Christmas. Dafford Murals has completed 10 murals on the floodwall along Levee Street at the city’s riverfront. (Brian LodenThe Vicksburg Post)
