Clinton crushes Missy Gators

[3/5/04]The 25 mph winds that whipped across Bazinsky Field Thursday evening made light poles shimmy, played havoc with fly balls, and turned the infield dirt into blinding duststorms, but it didn’t blow away Vicksburg High.

Clinton took care of that.

The Lady Arrows took advantage of seven VHS errors, collected 12 hits and scored 11 runs in the third inning to rout the Missy Gators 19-1.

Clinton’s Nicole Chisholm struck out 10 and allowed one hit in four innings, and Leslie Hutchinson went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Keri Harper drove in three runs for the Lady Arrows (2-1), while Melody Rossell and Karen McCullouch each had two RBIs.

Cherelle Stamps had the only hit and drove in the only run for Vicksburg (2-4).

“I knew we were going to have a hard time. It’s like I told the kids, they have to learn to adjust to the pitchers,” VHS coach Laquitta Smith said. “I really wanted them to get the bats around. That’s what they needed.”

Clinton took a 3-0 lead after two innings, and blew the game open in the third. Using a combination of bunts, errors, and mental mistakes by Vicksburg, the Lady Arrows sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs to take a 14-0 lead.

Clinton sent 12 hitters to the plate before the first out was recorded, and had eight hits in the inning. Despite the barrage, none of the balls were hit particularly hard except for a two-run double by Hutchinson that rolled to the fence.

“Their heads got down after they’d make an error, and we’d move up a base or two,” Clinton coach Mike Chambless said. “It’s just a matter of putting it in play.”

Three more errors led to five more runs for Clinton in the fourth inning before the Missy Gators finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame.

Courtney Prentiss reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundout by Stamps to make it 19-1, but it was far too late for VHS. Chisholm struck out the next two batters to end the game by the mercy rule.
