Rainy morning dampens park cleanup effort

Early-morning drizzle with the threat of potentially heavier rain later in the day forced Vicksburg National Military Park officials to cancel a cleanup project Saturday.

The cleanup was part of the nationwide National Public Lands Day program to get volunteers involved in improving and visiting the nation’s national parks and public lands.

Tentative plans call for the project to be rescheduled for Nov. 3, adding, “we’ll know more later in the week.”

Volunteers were to have begun working at 8 a.m. Saturday painting cannons and gun carriages and historic makers in the park.

A Shape Up, Junior Ranger program was also planned, but cloudy skies and a light drizzle greeted volunteers as they arrived, changing the plans.
