A Jackson woman died this morning from injuries she received after her SUV veered off Interstate 20 just after 2 a.m., a Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol spokesman said.

Elizabeth Smith, 51, address not available, was eastbound just past the truck scales about 9 miles east of Vicksburg and 2 miles west of Bovina when her red 2000 Nissan Exterra ran off the road and landed on its side in a ravine, said Cpl. Odis Easterling. She was wearing a seatbelt, Easterling said.

Smith was flown to University Medical Center where she died of internal injuries at 6:25 this morning, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, who said he did not order an autopsy.

Officials were still on the scene at 9 a.m. investigating the wreck and working to remove the vehicle from the ravine, where the SUV was resting upside down against the base of a culvert 15 to 20 feet below the I-20 roadway, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace.

“If there had not been a witness that saw her run off the road, she could have been there indefinitely,” he said. “It’s completely out of sight of the road.”

Easterling said no further information was available.

The fatal wreck was the fifth in Warren County outside the city this year, in addition to two reported inside the city limits.

Huskey said arrangements were being handled by Lakewood Funeral Home in Clinton.
