ON THE HUNT Joblessness holds in spite of layoffs

Warren County’s unemployment stayed hunkered at 9.3 percent in April, despite 230 layoffs from Grand Station Casino.

Figures from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security released Wednesday show the labor force was 21,390 for the month, up by 100 since March. Those seeking jobless benefits increased slightly to 1,990 from 1,970.

The local job picture survived a hit from 230 layoffs from Grand Station Casino, said Timothy Crudup, office manager for the WIN Job Center on Monroe Street because scores of employees searched for jobs elsewhere as part of the department’s “rapid response” after the casino closed March 28.

Not all of the casino’s labor force lived in Warren County, which also was factored in, Crudup said.

Statewide unemployment was 8.3 percent in April, down from 8.7 percent in March and 10 percent in April 2011. Adjusted for seasonal factors in the workplace, April’s rate was 8.7 percent.

Rankin and Holmes counties registered the state’s lowest and highest respective jobless rates in April. Rankin dropped two-tenths of a point, to 5.2 percent. Holmes was at 14.9 percent, down a full point from March.

Claiborne, Sharkey and Issaquena counties recorded lower rates for the second straight month. Claiborne was at 11.8 percent, down from 12.2 percent from March. Sharkey was at 10.8 percent, down from 12.6 percent. Issaquena was at 13.2 percent, down from 14.2.
