A native of Yemen who was arrested in August during a drug raid at the Pecan Mart at Culkin and Freetown Roads has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as an illegal alien and transferred to the Madison County Jail, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Ameen Gamil, 27, 20 Freetown Road, who had been in the Warren County Jail since the Aug. 26 raid, was taken into custody for federal agents Tuesday soon after posting a $50,000 bond on charges of possession of synthetic marijuana, also known as spice, and possession of Xanax, the sheriff said. Federal agents picked Gamil up early today and took him to Madison County, which holds federal detainees.

“He was in the country illegally,” Pace said. “When we ran his fingerprints through our automated fingerprint identification system, we noticed there was a problem, and the immigration people put a detainer on him then. When he posted bond, he was picked up. He never left the building.”

Gamil was one of two men arrested in the raid that resulted in the seizure of 7 pounds of spice, valued at $45,220. The raid was conducted by the sheriff’s department, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and a K-9 unit from the Vicksburg Police Department.

Besides the spice, officers seized 30 individually packaged bags of Xanax valued at $1,200, three laptop computers, a Glock 9mm handgun with two magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, pipes used to smoke marijuana or spice, more than $5,300 in a black garbage bag and counterfeit designer purses and NFL-brand T-shirts.

At the time, Pace said, MBN officials called the bust the largest seizure of spice in the state.
