Warren County residents whose homes were damaged by spring tornadoes have until the end of the month to apply for disaster assistance.
Residents have until the end of June to apply for FEMA recover assistance for damage inflicted by an E-F1 tornado that cut a path across Warren County on April 28.
As of this week 50 local residents have applied for assistance, and $8,453.78 in assistances has been distributed here, according to numbers released by FEMA.
The vast majority of the money —  $6,988.52 — was for housing assistance, while the other portion was labeled as “other needs.”
Not everyone who is eligible for assistance applies, Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said.
“You always have that. Some people simply don’t apply but they are eligible. That’s just a choice that they make for many different reasons.”
Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, and for other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs, FEMA spokesman Kurt Pickering said in an email.
“Survivors should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but under-insured applicants may receive help after their insurance claims have been settled,” Pickering said.
Low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes from the U.S. Small Business Administration might also be available, he said.
Individuals interested in applying for FEMA assistance can do so at www.disasterassistance.gov or from a smartphone or tablet at m.FEMA.gov.
