Bettie M. Boyd

Bettie M. Boyd died Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Merit Health River Region Medical Center. She was 77.

Bettie was the daughter of the late William Haze Sanders and Ethel Mae Lewis. She was a graduate of Sartartia High School and attended Hinds Junior College. She and her late husband operated Boyd’s Car Care for over 35 years.

Bettie was a Vicksburg Police Department school crossing guard at Grove Street School and St. Frances Xavier Academy for a number of years. She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary, treasurer, clerk and teacher.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Her life was devoted to family and young people. At the time of Bettie’s death, she was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Bethany Sunday School Class and Young at Heart.

She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Van Norman (Tony); son, Forrest Damon Boyd; four grandsons, John W. Van Norman (Jenna), Dustin H. Boyd, Joshua Boyd and Matthew Boyd; granddaughter, Hayley McDaniel (Preston); two great-granddaughters, Charlotte Van Norman and Avery Van Norman; four sisters, Alice M. Stevens, Hazel Jo Rushing, Nita Wigley and Debbie O’Neil; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James M. Boyd Sr.; and a son, James M. “Jimmy” Boyd II.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015, at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Ivey, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the service.

Memorials may be made to Highland Baptist Church, 3518 Halls Ferry Road, Vicksburg, MS 39180, and to the Baptist Children’s Village, Post Office Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060.

Pallbearers will be Deacons of Highland Baptist Church.
