WCHS haunted house promises thrills, chills

Some people thrive off of the adrenaline rush of fear, and they can find it in Vicksburg this Halloween at Frightmare Asylum.

This haunted house is not for the faint of heart.

For the fourth year, Warren Central High School Big Blue Band  will host the Frightmare Asylum at Vicksburg Mall, 3505 Pemberton Blvd.

Thursday will be the opening night for those who enjoy the fear. Starting at 6 p.m. people can pay $8 until 10 p.m. to have killers and ghouls jump out at them. Friday and Saturday the night will stretch from 6 p.m. until midnight with special guest OzBo the Clown and other horror and paranormal groups will visit Friday night.

“We go all out,” Kirkland Childers, volunteer and WCHS graduate, said. “We amp it up especially on Halloween night.”

Zombies, psychos and Leatherface are expected to make appearances throughout the night in the never-ending narrow walkway through the house. Bodies, witches and rooms covered in blood await those who dare to enter the dark halls.

In years past, they have had lines of around 700 people zig-zaging through the mall, and last year they made close to $8,000. Organizer Bill Meredith said people sometimes go through the haunted house three or four times.

The two main organizers are Meredith and Noel Tello, but band members, parents, friends and alumni help to put together the fright nights with at least a month of prior planning.

“We spend time on this to make sure they have a good time,” Childers said.

Last year they were able to keep the bones of the set up at the mall, but Meredith promises they have made a few changes since last year.

“It’s never going to be the same,” Meredith said. “It’s always going to change, and we hope to scare more people.”

Meredith said mall security and a few off-duty cops help out with keeping things under control. Stores in the mall seem to be supportive of the spectacle because it brings in business, especially from the parents who are waiting on their children.

This Saturday was the first day of the haunted house specifically open for children and chickens. For a lesser price, people were able to walk through a far less scary labyrinth of dark halls during the day.

Heath Boyte and Landon Clement went through their first haunted house Saturday with Mandy Clement. Boyte said he doesn’t mind being scared when he plays games, but Mandy really enjoys the thrill.

“I like being scared. I like that kind of stuff,” Mandy Clement said.

The boys said they saw skeletons, spider webs, and bloody handprints.

“And I think we saw monsters,” Heath Clement said.

All proceeds go to the Big Blue Band to help cover any travel or other expenses they have. The band will have a few other fundraisers throughout the year but this is their main event.

This Saturday the band was at a competition, but next week most of the members will be around to dress up and help scare the masses as they roam the halls.
