A themed art show featuring artists from around the state is scheduled for Friday at the Attic Gallery, 1101Washington St.
“We do this every year,” the owner of the gallery Lesley Silver said.
“We invite a group of artists, both familiar and new, to create something inspired by a theme. In the past we have done books, cats, doors, local scenes, birds and trees. We like to give a little nudge with the theme, but still leave plenty of room for interpretation on the part of the artists.”
Beginning at 7 p.m. participants will have the opportunity to view more than 20 artists’ interpretation of “Endangered” the theme for this year’s show, which will feature new paintings, sculpture, collage, fabric pieces, and more.
Silver said the idea behind the “Endangered” theme was to try and get the artist to focus on things that are sometimes unappreciated.
“Endangered seemed like a powerful concept and at first it may seem negative, but my feeling was this theme is a way to spotlight things and concepts that we take for granted. For example, Lucy Hunnicutt has done a colorful painting of farmers and bees working together reminding us that in some places bees are in trouble.”
Silver said some of the artists have chosen to use cellphones as their motif — bringing attention to the possible endangerment of personal social interaction in lieu of technological devises.
Jamie Tate, who is one of the artists whose works will be featured in the Attic Gallery’s upcoming show, said she liked the “Endangered” theme.
“This theme was fun because it stretches us, and there were a lot of different approaches an artist could take,” Tate said.
Admission to the show is free, and in addition to Tate, the featured artists will include Suzi Altman, Elayne Goodman, Ron Lindsey, Sam Biebers, Ellen Langford, Lucy Hunnicutt, Patt Odom, Jean Blue, Rob Cooper, Sam Clark, Linda Hall, Anne Campbell, Rhonda Blasingame, Pat Abernathy, Jamie Tate, Earl Simmons, Lane Berg, Martha Ferris, Susie Ranager, and Silver.
