Grand jury indicts former city employee

A former city of Vicksburg court services employee has been indicted by a Warren County grand jury on a charge of embezzlement.

Marquita Nicole Connor, 34, 106 Linda Circle, a former deputy clerk in court services, is accused of taking $2,000 from court services, which is under the Vicksburg Police Department, between July 1 and Dec. 30, 2016.

Connor was fired from her position Feb. 21, according to city records.

In other grand jury cases:

• Saul Anthony Mata Jr., 24, 906 Wabash Ave., was charged with attempted murder and accused of attempting to kill his cousin, Steven Carter in October.

According to police, the shooting occurred in the 700 block of Thomas Street, and was the result of an earlier argument between Mata and his cousin. Carter was standing outside his house with another man when Mata walked toward him, pulled a gun and started shooting, firing several shots. The other man was able to run away and was not wounded.

• Claude Friley, 24, and Lacey Renae Smith, 19, both of 117 Impala Drive, were charged with larceny— stealing a dog.

The couple are accused of stealing a dog from the Vicksburg-Warren Humane Society on U.S. 61 South.

• Nertil Xhelo, 33, Jacksonville, Fla., possession with a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

•Michael Glenn Barnett, 29, 102 Freedom Lane, possession of a controlled substance within a correctional facility.

• Johnny Wayne Nevels, 47, 100 Chickasaw Drive, three counts of possession of a controlled substance. Nichols is charged as a habitual offender because of two previous felony convictions.

• Nathaniel Marsaw, 45, Crystal Springs, sale of a controlled substance.

• Maverick Lee Wigley, 26, 4103 Redwood Road, possession of a controlled substance.

• Larry L. Sykes, 62, 905 Clay St. Apt. A, two counts sale of a controlled substance; two counts possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Sykes is charged as a habitual offender because he has two prior felony convictions.

• Peter Cardell Haggard, 47, 170 Curry St., and Tiffany Cherie Smith, 39, 728 Sherman Ave., attempted non-residential burglary.

• Christopher Donald Ashley, 20, and Walter Wayne Reeves, no age given, both of 95 Chapel Hills Drive, vehicle burglary.

• Justin Elizondo, 22, Moss Point, grand larceny.

• Gerald Wayne Bishop, 36, 1222 Jackson St., sale of a controlled substance.

• Destiny Hope Brand, 23, 220 Old Mount Alban Road, sale of a controlled substance.

• Kayla Danielle Henley, 19, 405B Timberlane Place, sale of a controlled substance.
