Vicksburg Post staff honored at MPA awards

The Vicksburg Post won several awards in its audience class, including Best Magazine for Vicksburg Living, during Saturday’s Mississippi Press Association Better Newspaper Contest Editorial Division at the annual convention in New Orleans.

The Vicksburg Post was third in General Excellence behind the Hattiesburg American and Natchez Democrat.

The judges remarked Vicksburg Living had “great local feel. Nice mix of stories, photos and ads. Runaway winner in this category.”

The Vicksburg Post also took first place in its division in the best front-page category and for design. The judges remarked “Beautiful section fronts. Excellent local photography, smartly mixed with white space and thoughtful headlines. … I would read this paper every chance I got — the best of a strong field.”

The Vicksburg Post also placed first and second for editorials; took second for website; second for the planned series on Breast Cancer Awareness; and third for editorial page.

Sports editor Ernest Bowker took second place for his sports column, game story, sports feature photograph and best sports page or section.

Staff writer Brandon O’Connor took second place for lede, was second in the magazine story category and won third place for spot news photograph. Staff writer John Surratt placed third for spot news story.

General manager Jan Griffey finished third in the general interest column category. Photographer Courtland Wells took third in general news photograph. Wells and staff writer Terri Cowart Frazier combined for a third in best news package.
