The number of children who have ridden the carousel might not have been calculated yet, but it’s pretty close to “a lot.”

The number of selfies and family photos taken in front of the Christmas tree at Washington Street Park might not have been calculated yet, but early estimates are “a lot.”

The number of those who have ridden the trolley, sipped a cup of hot chocolate or heard a story read from the pavilion at the Washington Street Park might not have been calculated, but if we’re guessing, it’s “a lot.”

While it is only its inaugural season, the Christmas in the Park, organized by Downtown Vicksburg Main Street, Sheffield Rentals and a host of elves — volunteers — and dedicated city employees, has the feel of a cherished city tradition.

The sheer scope of the success of Christmas in the Park won’t be fully realized until well after it’s over, but for those who have been there, those who have seen the smiles on the faces of the children and those who helped bring this idea to reality, the work and money invested has been well spent.

There is an economic impact that is being felt by businesses downtown, but the impact of this weeks-long event is more than just immediate. An event of this nature — in just its first year — adds to the list of amenities downtown Vicksburg has to offer and is proof once again of just how vital downtown is to our community and our economy.

What’s better is there is still time to enjoy the event. Christmas in the Park continues through December 21.

Hours are Wednesday from 5-9 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday’s from 1 to 9 p.m.

Congratulations and thanks to all of those involved with this newest of Vicksburg traditions. It truly is a gift to our entire community.
