One person was killed and five others injured in a horrific wreck Monday afternoon involving a Chevrolet Venture van and a log truck.

The accident, which reportedly happened around 3:30 p.m., occurred near the intersection of U.S. 61 North and North Washington Street.

Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey pronounced Mary Louise Wright, 63, of Vicksburg, a passenger in the van, dead at the scene.

“It was a very serious situation,” Huskey said.

“This is the worst I’ve seen in my 30 years of law enforcement,” said Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong, a retired state trooper. “We’re lucky we only had one fatality. We could have had five, the way that van was pushed in the ditch and couldn’t go further.”

He said police had worked several accidents where 18-wheelers had flipped while turning from North Washington to onto U.S. 61 North, but could not remember a fatality in the six years he has been chief.

Vicksburg Police officer Leonce Young said Danielle Johnson, 32, 130 Alcorn Drive, the driver of the car, and Bertha Mixon, 70, 1246 Sherman Ave., were taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center. Johnson’s children, whose names were withheld because of their ages, were taken to Merit Health River Region Medical Center, along with Michael L. Davis, 54, of Oakvale, the driver of the 18-wheeler, who Young said was treated and released.

Johnson was in good condition and Mixon was in fair condition Tuesday morning, a UMMC spokeswoman said.

Young said the van was eastbound on North Washington Street and Johnson was attempting to cross U.S. 61 North to get to a convenience store on the east side of the highway when the vehicles collided in the northbound lane of the highway.

The impact of the collision pushed the van several yards along the shoulder of the highway, knocking the truck’s hood and crushing the passenger side of the van, spinning it around and shoving it into a ditch in front of the store. The van ended up resting on its side, trapping its five occupants.

Wright, the children’s grandmother, appeared to have been traveling in the back of the van when it was hit. First responders worked for more than an hour to remove Wright and the other passengers from the crumpled vehicle.

Young said Johnson has been¬ charged with driving with a suspended license and failure to yield right of way.
