NRoute begins a new service Friday when its Trolley Express Vicksburg hits the streets to provide transportation to the city’s tourist destinations.

NRoute executive director Evelyn Bumpers said the trolley will run daily, making seven stops every 40 minutes. It will be parked at the city’s south parking garage at the corner of South and Walnut streets.

“It is ready to go,” she said. “Vicksburg is a tourism city and this will be used to help promote tourism.”

NRoute presently runs three routes in the city, Bumpers said, adding one current downtown route goes to Kings and Marcus Bottom, and loops outside the tourism areas.

“This new trolley will cater more to tourists and showcase the city. This new trolley could bring return visitors and encourage people to choose to reside in Vicksburg,” she said.

The Trolley Express Vicksburg will begin its first run, taking visitors to Vicksburg’s accommodations, attractions, shopping, dining and convention center Friday after a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting at the south entrance of The Old Depot Museum, 1010 Levee St.

Its regular schedule will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Tickets are $4 for adults, 50 cents for children ages 3-12. Children age 2 and under will ride free. Passengers will receive a Vicksburg Visitors Guide, which includes a comprehensive map of the attractions of the city.

Free rides will be given the first week of operation.

The trolley will offer transportation within Vicksburg’s main tourist areas, with service including stops at the Old Depot Museum on Catfish Row, Cedar Grove Mansion in the Garden District, the corner of Crawford and Washington Streets in the Downtown Shopping District, The Old Court House Museum, and Duff Green Mansion in Old Town Vicksburg, the Southern Cultural Heritage Center and the Outlets at Vicksburg.

Markers will be placed at all stops so passengers will be able to easily find the Trolley Express.

The trolley combines the nostalgic charm of the past with modern day comforts such as air conditioning and a smooth ride, the 24-passenger Trolley Express will provide convenient and affordable transportation for those who choose to park their car and leave the driving to the conductor.

The trolley was purchased in December 2014 by NRoute using federal and city funds, with 80 percent of its $192,979 cost paid by a federal transportation grant and the city paying the 20 percent match totaling $38,595.
