[01/18/01] Warren Central defensive lineman Thad Henderson has one more chance to convince college scouts he’s the real deal.

The two-time Vicksburg Post Defensive Player of the Year will join the state’s elite at the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game in Mobile, Ala., on June 16.

“It’s quite an honor and it’s most deserving,” said WC coach Robert Morgan, who was on hand as administrative coach when the team was picked Wednesday. “He’ll get to play against the best Alabama has … it’s a great opportunity.

The unsigned 6-foot-1, 280-pounder was one of only six defensive linemen selected, so he should get plenty of playing time against Alabama’s best. He will play nose tackle in the five-man front.

Henderson had 112 tackles and 12 sacks this season despite continuous double- and triple-teams.

Morgan said Alabama better think about double-teaming him again.

“If they don’t, they may have some trouble,” Morgan said with a chuckle.

High-flying quarterbacks Damarius Bilbo of Moss Point and Gentry record-setting passer Michael Spurlock highlight the select team that has won just five of the first 13 meetings with Alabama in the series.

The game, played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, draws recruiters from around the South, so Morgan said Henderson should get plenty of opportunity to be noticed.

“Some colleges have stayed away because of his size, but he will have several opportunities to play in college,” Morgan said. “This is a great way to showcase his talent.”

Henderson is the first Warren County player selected to the all-star team since Mississippi State safety Josh Morgan in 1998.
