Services for Thelma Garrett Jefferson will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark M.B. Church on North Washington Street with the Rev. Johnnie Gilmore III officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jefferson died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 69.

She was retired from Batesville Casket Co. She was a member of Ruth Chapter No. 2 Order of Eastern Star and St. Mark M.B. Church

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Myles and Bertha Trisby; and a brother, Charlie Myles.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Jefferson Jr. of Vicksburg; three sons, Donald J. Garrett, David W. Garrett and Alvin R. Garrett, all of Vicksburg; seven daughters, Patricia G. Williams of Jackson, Shirley G. Swartz, Sandra G. Brown and Susan G. Bells, all of Vicksburg, Lucy G. Jones of Columbus, Ga., Brenda G. Free of West Point and Bertha G. “Penny” Woodberry of Raymond; 21 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and other relatives including Leverta Harris of Chicago and the Passmore, Harris, Sims and Trisby families, all of Vicksburg.

JAMES M. MORRIS SR.

James M. “Jim” Morris Sr. died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 66.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Morris was a graduate of Carr Central High School. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he served as captain of the football team in 1955.

He was a veteran of the Army and owned and operated Service Management Company in Houston, Texas, until retirement in 1979. He also owned and operated Toys and Soldiers Museum until 1995 and was a member of the Toy and Soldier Collectors of America.

He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Houston and founded the Touchdown Club and Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston.

Mr. Morris was a member of the Vicksburg Country Club and Crawford Street United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Vicksburg Historical Society and the Vicksburg Foundation of Historic Preservation.

Survivors include his wife, Ann D. Morris of Vicksburg; a daughter, Anne Martin Morris of West Monroe, La.; two sons, James Martin Morris Jr. of Denver and Michael C. Morris of Ridgeland; two brothers, George A. Morris of Atlanta and John W. Morris of Nashville; one sister, Grace M. Spears of Jackson; a granddaughter, Barbara Ann Morris of Vicksburg; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 Tuesday night at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bill Fenwick, Gordon Carr, Chris Bates, David Speyerer, Glynn Russell, Raymond Ray, Billy Bishop and Gregory Gooch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. F. Lamar McMillin, Jerry Silver, Pat Patterson and Shouphie Habeeb.

BETTY GRACE WILSON

Betty Grace Wilson died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Brookside Hospital in Richmond, Calif. She was 78.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tim Wilson and Maggie Scott Wilson; two brothers, Lawson Wilson and Elijah “Buddy” Wilson; three sisters, Mary Wilson, Emma Lona Myle and Mary Washington.

She is survived by a son, Charles J. Wilson Sr. of Vicksburg; a brother, Willie J. Wilson Sr. of Maywood, Ill.; a sister, Sirflonia Washington of Richmond, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and other relatives including the Williams, Gaskin and Washington families of Vicksburg.
