Opening up to a new world

First Presbyterian Church kindergartner Avery Lynn Liddell is surprised when classmate Rob Jarvis pets one of the newborn chicks that hatched in their classroom Monday morning. Looking on are Joseph Jabour, second from left, and Keaton Hansen. Kindergarten teacher Martha Martin said the students have been counting down the 21 days it takes for the eggs to hatch in an incubator. The eggs came from Martin’s farm off Oak Ridge Road. Martin said the 36 chicks will be given away. “Blacky” and “Tiger Stripe,” named by the students, came from two of the first eggs to hatch. (The Vicksburg Post/MELANIE DUNCAN)
