SAUL FRIED
BATON ROUGE Saul Fried died today, April 8, 2002, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 85.
A former resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Fried had lived in Baton Rouge for the last 15 years. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of B’nai Israel congregation in Baton Rouge and Anshe Chesed Congregation in Vicksburg. He owned and operated Saul Fried Furniture Store in Vicksburg for 37 years. He served as president of the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce and of the Anshe Chesed Congregation for two years. He was president of the Retail Furniture Association of Mississippi. He was on the Vicksburg Hospital Board and the Board of Directors of Unifirst Bank of Vicksburg and later of Merchants Bank. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 25 years.
Mr. Fried was president of the Cemetery Committee for B’nai Israel Congregation for three years in Baton Rouge. He was vice president of Gerard Furniture for 10 years. He was a volunteer for the last five years at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Fried of Baton Rouge; his daughter, Laura Weil Deutsch of Baton Rouge; his brother, J.M. Fried Jr. of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Camille Williams of Providence, R.I., and Matthew Williams of Austin, Texas; and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jewish Cemetery in Vicksburg.
Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rabenhorst Funeral Home in Baton Rouge.
Pallbearers will be James Fried, Edwin Fried, Jon Brownstein, Fred Brownstein, Matthew Williams and Richard Marcus.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Foundation of Greater Baton Rouge or the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
SUSAN RENAE HARRIS
Susan Renae Harris died Saturday, April 6, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident in Hattiesburg. She was 25.
Miss Harris was a 1996 honor graduate of Warren Central High School and a 2001 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where she was listed on the President’s List. She was the secretary to Coach Jeff Bower. She was a member of Bovina Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, James Sanders; and her paternal grandparents, Arky and Myrtis Harris.
She is survived by her parents, Edwin and JoAnn Sanders Harris of Vicksburg; two sisters, Amy Sessions and Tammy Harris, both of Vicksburg; her brother, Randy Harris of Vicksburg; her maternal grandmother, Ruby Sanders of Vicksburg; and other relatives.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Chip Starnes, pastor of Bovina Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Nicky King, Ed Minor, Ricky King, B.J. Smithhart, Wayne Lynch, Mark Cahill, Jay Hopson and Jo Jo Hopson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Downey, Wayne Patrick, Ronnie Harvey, Sonny Hickman, Bill Clark, Allen Yearwood, Richard Bush and Greg Cooper.

LEE HARNIE JOHNSON
CARY, N.C. Lee Harnie Johnson died Thur day, April 4, 2002, at Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, N.C. He was 93.
Dr. Johnson was born in Houston, Texas. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the Rice Institute in 1930, his master of arts degree in 1931 and his master of science degree in 1932 from Harvard University and his doctorate from Harvard in 1935. He was a fellow in mathematics at Rice Institute from 1930 until 1931. He was assistant in civil engineering at Harvard University from 1932 until 1935, assistant engineering aide at Waterways Experiment Station from 1935 until 1936, assistant to engineer in charge of design at U.S. Engineers Office in Mobile, Ala. from 1936 until 1937, dean of engineering and professional civil engineering at the University of Mississippi from 1937 until 1950, director of Defense War Training Program from 1941 until 1945 and dean of engineering and professor of civil engineering at Tulane University from 1950 until 1972. He was named emeritus dean in 1972, W.R. Irby Professor of Engineering from 1972 until 1979 and a mathematics teacher at Newman High School from 1979 until 1987.
He authored three books, “The Slide Rule” in 1947, “Nomography and Empirical Equations” in 1952 and “Engineering Principles and Problems” in 1960.
Dr. Johnson was a Graham Baker and Hohenthal scholar at Rice Institute and a Hilton scholar at Harvard University.
The Lee H. Johnson Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in his honor at Tulane University and an engineering scholarship was established in his honor at the University of Mississippi in 1999.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Engineering Education, Louisiana Engineering Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Delta Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon, Gamma Alpha, Omicron Delta Kappa, New Orleans Country Club, Boston Club and several Carnival organizations in New Orleans.
He is survived by his wife, Kitty O’Meallie Johnson; two sons, Dr. Lee McKay Johnson and Dr. William Irving Johnson; two stepdaughters, Sue Ericsson and Kathryn Launey; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives including Alice Owen Johnson, Cheryl McCartney Johnson, Ronald Wakelin and J. Pitts Launey.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher-Riles Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Wednesday until the service at the church in New Orleans.
