Tennis courts at Clear Creek resurfaced, open for business

For the first time in recent memory, there are two public tennis facilities in Warren County.

Tennis courts at Clear Creek Golf Course have been resurfaced and are open for play, course pro Randy Tupper said. Tupper, who has been the pro at Clear Creek since 1991, believed it is the first time the courts have been refurbished since the facility opened in the late 1970s.

“As far as I know, that was the original surface,” Tupper said.

The courts are open during daylight hours, and there is no charge to play. Eventually lights will be installed, and the courts will also be available at night, Tupper said.

The only other public tennis facility in Warren County is at Halls Ferry Park. The new courts should help promote tennis in the area, Vicksburg Tennis Association president Brenda Koestler said.

“I think it’s great for the people that are out there,” Koestler said. “Anytime you have the facility, it helps promote it.”

The resurfaced courts may not be permanent, however.

A thorough renovation of the courts would cost about $80,000. The latest resurfacing cost only $7,500, but must be redone every 5-8 years, Tupper said.

In the coming months, Tupper said a registration system would be implemented to track usage of the courts and determine whether there is enough play to warrant keeping them at Clear Creek when the time comes for another resurfacing.
