Building on the past

Vicksburg Street Department employee Ernest Garrett lays bricks along Crawford Street near the Crawford Street parking lot on Washington Street Thursday. Garrett said the wood-mold brick wall with iron fencing covers about 80 feet and will be made of 8,500 bricks once it is completed in a week. The cast-iron pier, at right, dates to 1892 and was part of the Piazza and Botto Office Building, according to an Old Court House Museum photograph. Merchants National Bank and Trust Company later occupied the site until that building burned in 1972. The lot has been vacant and used as parking since.(The Vicksburg Post/MELANIE DUNCAN)
