Missy Gators’ miscues costly in loss to Madison

[3/21/03]Errors opened the door Thursday evening for a Madison Central blowout of Vicksburg.

The Missy Gators (2-6) committed seven errors, including four in a decisive second inning, in a 12-2 loss to powerful Madison (7-3).

Madison scored five unearned runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead and the Missy Gators never recovered.

Madison freshman Danielle Ryan was cruising until the bottom of the fifth, when Vicksburg put together its only offensive rally of the night.

Katie Jenkins led off with a single and moved to second when Shannon Arnold reached on an error. Brandi Head followed with an RBI groundout and Porshia Ferguson had an RBI double as Vicksburg cut the deficit to 9-2.

The Lady Jaguars came back in the top of the sixth to score three runs on four hits and two Vicksburg errors to take a 12-2 lead.

Heather Shelby had a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth for Vicksburg, but relief pitcher Rachel Iupe retired the next two batters to end the game.

Ryan recorded the win, while Whitney Smith took the loss.

Vicksburg will play at Northwest Rankin today, then play in the Lady Vikes’ Invitational on Saturday.

WC 9, Oak Grove, La. 3

Warren Central warmed up for its’ own tournament Thursday with a convincing win over Oak Grove, La.

Cookie Johnson had three hits, including a double and a home run, and three RBIs to pace the Lady Vikes’ 15-hit attack.

Brittany Fuller had three doubles and an RBI, while Anna Mitchell had three hits and two RBIs and Keisha Blue had a home run and two RBIs.

Fuller also recorded the win.

Warren Central will open its tournament tonight at 6:30 p.m. against Rayville,. La.
