Hassell takes medalist honors at Natchez match

[4/15/03]Vicksburg High senior Bill Hassell shot a 1-under par 70 at Duncan Park in Natchez to win medalist honors, but Natchez Cathedral beat the Gators in the team competition.

Cathedral shot a 307, easily beating VHS’ 324. Natchez High was third in the three-team match with a 383.

The shot of the day came from Vicksburg’s Kyle Christian, who holed a wedge shot on the fly from 50 yards out on the sixth hole. Christian shot a personal-best 77 for the day.

“It was a slam-dunk, as they call it,” VHS coach Mike Coleman said of Christian’s shot. Coleman is also the VHS girls basketball coach.

Vicksburg will play in the Warren Central Invitational Thursday at Clear Creek Golf Course in Bovina.

The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
