Weekend activities abound

(10/02/03)Fall is in the air, and downtown Vicksburg has a busy Saturday planned.

Festivities include the Old Court House Flea Market, the RebStock music show, Red Carpet Invitational high school marching band contest, Walk for Diabetes, Downtown Fall Festival and the kickoff of Fall Pilgrimage.

The 21st annual Old Court House Flea Market will be from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the street level of Court Square outside the museum. Hundreds of booths will be stocked with food, art, plants, antiques, ceramics, crafts and handmade iron and wooden items.

The sixth annual RebStock jam session with the Mississippi Old Time Music Society will be from 1 until 4 p.m. on the lawn of the Old Court House Museum, followed by the “Hallelujah Band” concert at 7 p.m. inside the courtroom. Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12.

Past RebStock performers have included guests from Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and this year’s duo features award-winning acoustic musicians from Calgary, Canada, and Grand Junction, Colo.

The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi 1.1 mile Walkfest will start at 9:30 a.m. with registration an hour before at the BancorpSouth Bank parking lot, 820 South St.

Downtown Vicksburg’s Fall Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entertainment will be on the completed River Stage Plaza, 1300 Washington St. parking lot, with three different bands and exhibitions by GymSouth, the Vicksburg Twirlers and ATA Black Belt Academy. Children’s activities will include the Little Red Train, face painting, dart throws, moon jumps and a pony ride.

Fall Pilgrimage begins Saturday and ends Oct. 25. Tours include Anchuca, Christ Church, Duff Green Mansion, Great Hope Manor, Cedar Grove, The Corners, Baer House, Martha Vick House and the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex. Morning and afternoon tour tickets are $6 per tour site, $18 per three-site tour. Tickets for students under 12 are $3 per tour site, $9 per three-site tour.

The Red Carpet Invitational will be at Vicksburg High School Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. Thirteen high school marching bands from across the state including Warren Central High School’s Big Blue Band will be performing in the competition. The Vicksburgh High “Pride” Band will give an exhibition performance to end the day. Admission is $5. The stadium is located at the intersection of Lee and Drummond streets.
