Henry Hampton

Henry Hampton died Thursday, Dec. 4., 2003, at West Carroll Care Center in Oak Grove. He was 94.

Mr. Hampton was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Willard Hampton; his father, Willie Hampton; a daughter, Shirley Byargeon; and a great-granddaughter, Crystal Armfield.

Survivors include a son, Steve Hampton of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Martha Wallace of Oak Grove; a sister, Gladys Chambless of Oak Grove; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. Leslie Yates officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Malone II, Jerry Malone, Joey Schrock, Ottis Pardon, Floyd Myers and Joe Hampton.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Kavalier Odel Pardon and Geter Gunter.

Juanita Reed Jackson

Juanita Reed Jackson died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 89.

A Claiborne County native, Mrs. Jackson lived in Indianapolis, Ind. for more than 50 years before moving to Vicksburg. She was a member of Bright Morning Star M.B. Church.

Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Jackson; her mother, Leola Reed Jones; her father, Willis Paige; a stepson, Maurice Vance; a grandson, Richard Anderson; and her companion, Bennie Vance.

She is survived by two daughters, Rosie L. Nash and Leola Long, both of Vicksburg; two stepdaughters, Carla Jones and Martha Vance of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Alvin Junald McGowan

Alvin Junald McGowan died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 25.

He was preceded in death by his father, Allen McGowan Sr.; a brother, Amos Decell McGowan; grandparents, Eliza Price, Percy and Lillie McGowan, Johnny Woods and Dan Price.

Mr. McGowan is survived by his mother, Elsa Brent McGowan of Vicksburg; four sisters, Rosie Davis, Alora Jones, Annie McGowan and Cathy McGowan, all of Vicksburg; five brothers, Allen McGowan, Jim McGowan, Eddie McGowan, Donald McGowan and Calvin McGowan, all of Vicksburg; a grandmother, Rosie Lee Wallace of Vicksburg; other relatives and friends including Noah “Sonny” Taylor.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Jeff D. Monk

Jeff D. “J.D.” Monk died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at the Veterans Hospital in Jackson. He was 78.

Mr. Monk was a native of Scott County and after moving from Vicksburg, was a longtime resident of Rankin County. He was a World War II Army veteran. He retired as a pipe fitter at Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant. Mr. Monk was a member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local Union #619 in Vicksburg. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Monk is survived by his wife, Gail Monk of Brandon; three daughters, Mary Watson of Lafayette, La., Janice Byrd and Cheryl Monk, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Elma Hebler of Vicksburg and Maude Ware of Sebastopol; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Burial will follow at Lakeland Place Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes.

Joanna B. Steen

Joanna B. Steen died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 63.

A native of Batesville, Mrs. Steen lived in Vicksburg for the past 25 years. She was a member of the Greenville Baptist Church.

Mrs. Steen was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. William Steen; her parents, Creed and Mabel Arickson; two brothers, Clifford Beaver and Wayne Beaver.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen Miller of Crowder, Laurie McNeil of Vicksburg, and Susan Chapman of Pontotoc; a son, Bo Bufkin of Cleveland; a sister, Robin Self of Batesville; three brothers, Jim Beaver, Tony Beaver and Jerry Beaver, all of Batesville; and six grandchildren.
