[1/10/04]Most of Warren Central’s girls soccer players took the better part of Friday’s 15-0 win as an off day.
Judging by the way Forest Hill was playing, the Lady Vikes’ reserves could have done the same.
Warren Central (6-8-1, 2-0 Division 6-5A) outshot the Lady Rebels 34-0 in earning a Class 5A state playoff berth for the first time since 2000. A win over archrival Vicksburg on Tuesday will give the Lady Vikes the Division 6-5A title and a home playoff game.
“It feels good because we are finally going (to the playoffs),” said Mary Clare Scurria, who scored two of WC’s goals. “I think we’ll do really good.”
Liza Kate Chaney, Chelsa Jones and Kari Lieberman each scored two goals as the Lady Vikes took a 9-0 lead into the half. Kara Cretsinger, Julie Spence, Kristine Fischenich, Kim Danczyk, Rachel Vinzant, Valera Vollor and Shelbi Conerly added one goal apiece.
Fischenich also had three assists.
“We were well prepared for this game because we knew the top two teams in this district go to the playoffs,” said first-year WC coach Kristin Gough. “The girls came here real focused and knew that we needed a win.”
Warren Central scored one minute into the game, opening an onslaught that never let up. By the time WC began substituting 10 minutes into the game the score was 4-0.
Gough tried to get the second half shortened from 40 to 30 minutes, but the Forest Hill coach refused. The Lady Vikes added six more goals in the second half.
“I wanted to use this game as a practice because we didn’t get to practice yesterday,” said Gough, whose practice got rained out on Thursday.

A.J. Barnes, Tyler Wing and Allen Carlisle each had two assists, while Waites, Mullen, Rushing, Tom and Seth Hudspeth each had an assist in the win.
